Burls are large round growths often seen on the trunks of trees. They are a prized item amongst wooden bowl turners. With there lovely grain displayed within I would have great difficulty in chiseling the centre of a wooden bowl into shavings. Instead I saw them into ½ to 1 “ slices and put there handsome grain to use in a different matter. The most difficult part of the process is drying the burl slices after they have been sawn. This is a careful process of stacking the slices in the same way you would stack lumber with dry cross stickers to let the air flow through the pile. The problem with burls is if they dry to fast they split like crazy. So I cover the pile with wood shavings to restrict the airflow somewhat. There is a fine line between slowing down the drying process and firing up the mould growth process so the pile has to be torn apart every few days as a check.
